SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Raymond C. Merritt, Jr. has been a faculty member at Gallaudet since 2002. He is currently on academic leave while he works on his Ph.D. dissertation research at the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) at the National Institutes of Health. His research program is in conjunction with the Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Ph.D. Program at the University of Maryland. He is also a Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship recipient, in which he receives a stipend to support his academic research while he is away from Gallaudet.

Mr. Merritt's dissertation research is on inner ear proteins that contribute to deafness in mammals. He is currently studying a two recently identified proteins found in the stereocilia structures of hair cells in the cochlea, which are thought to be important for hearing function.

Mr. Merritt has taught Genetics, Introduction to Biology, and Principles of Biology for Science Majors. He will resume teaching for the Department this upcoming Spring 2008 semester.
