The Department of Biology at Gallaudet offers both Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in biology, as well as a minor. We designed  our B.A. degree program for majors who are seeking employment after college, or as a second major for education majors who aim to become high school biology teachers.
Our B.S. program is especially designed for majors who plan to continue on to graduate, medical, dental or veterinary school. B.S. students are expected to take additional courses in physics, organic chemistry, biochemistry, mathematics, and research methods. These course requirements reflect the interdisciplinary nature of modern biology.
Both the B.A. and B.S. programs are flexible, allowing students to take electives in their field of interest, whether it may be environmental science, genetics, human physiology, or something else. Through Gallaudet's membership in the consortium of universities, our students have a wide range of elective courses available to them.
Outside of the classroom, most of our majors place in summer internships doing field work or laboratory research through the Career Center and/or the professional connections of our department faculty.
Declaring a MajorStudents who wish to declare a major at Gallaudet University use the "Major Selection/Change Form," available from Academic Advising (in the Jordan Student Academic Center, Room 2220) or from the Registrar (in Chapel Hall, Room 101). Students need to get signatures of their advisors and the department chair. Some departments have specific requirements for students to be majors. Those requirements are listed below.
Requirements for Admission to a Major in Biology
Students considering majoring in biology or a related field are advised to begin taking courses as early as possible, so that all the coursework can be completed for a timely graduation. For guidance feel free to consult with your academic advisor or with any of the members of our department.
Freshmen should enroll in Principles of Biology for Science Majors (BIO 107-108 with laboratory 109-110), and Honors students should enroll in Honors Biology (BIO 101H-102H with laboratory 103H-104H). Freshmen intending to enter the B.S. degree program should also enroll in a mathematics course as well as General Chemistry (CHE 107-108 with laboratory 109-110).
Before declaring a major in Biology, both B.A. and B.S. degree seekers must complete any math and English conditions, and should complete Principles of Biology for Science Majors or Honors Biology with a grade of C or better.
Students must complete Principles of Biology for Science Majors I and II (BIO 107-108), with Principles of Biology Laboratory for Science Majors I and II (BIO 109-110), and ENG 102 or the equivalent with a grade of "C" or better before declaring a major in biology.
